Default New Battery

Hey everyone,

I just put a 383 in my 1975. I need a new battery and was hoping to get some input on the best brand/type I should get.

Thanks

Most of the inexpensive battery's will do fine for 3-4 years.

I got the cheapest one from advance auto and walmart. It has the right amps and works just fine for the use it gets.

Optima's are a pain in the butt to recharge if they run down. I'm on my second one and I don't think I'd go with another. Get a good brand of regular battery and you'll be good for the next 4 or 5 years and you'll pay less.

Yes Sir; GM Delco is just 79.00, I believe they are 5 year warranty. I buy the ones with both posts, side & top. Easy to get battery cables to hook up. Also I have a quick disconnect on the ground side. I use the top post and the side post cable goes on the other end of it. Have a great day. Gene

I don't have a bunch of electronics installed such as a custom stereo, so I don't need the Yellow Top. I just need it to start. The Dual Spal fans are probably the most draw I have. I also have a CS 133 100 amp alternator.

The OPTIMA® RedTop® high-performance AGM battery is the ultimate high-CCA starting battery designed to deliver the strongest 5-second ignition power for a reliable start-up every time. The RedTop will outperform and outlast traditional batteries in demanding cranking/starting applications. With unparalleled high power delivery and extreme resistance to the most common causes of battery failure, the RedTop is idea for trucks, SUV's, luxury cars, hot rods, off-road vehicles and other applications that require a leak-proof starting-only battery.

The YellowTop® high-performance AGM battery is one of the only true dual-purpose automotive batteries available. With premium cranking power and unparalleled cycling capability (rechargeability), it is perfect for modern accessory-loaded vehicles. The YellowTop can repeatedly bounce back from deep power drains to full energy capacity, so it can power plenty of electronics and still start you up time after time. Lower internal resistance also provides more consistent power output and faster recharges.
Trucks with winches, vehicles with multiple electronics, cars with high-demand audio systems, commercial vehicles and heavy equipment all rely on this battery to provide ultimate starting and deep cycle power.

When the battery that was in my '69 when I bought it crapped out, I checked the codes and it was six years old...good service so I couldn't complain. I replaced it with an Optima Red Top...no troubles until it died after just over three years...a month or so past the free replacement period of the warranty.

It turned out cheaper to go to WalMart and buy one their Maxx batteries very highly rated by Consumer Reports than to get another Optima and pay the pro-rated price.

The WalMart Maxx battery has been top notch so far with no problems...but I would expect that from any battery barely more than a year old.

Optima Red Top! In my 11:1 BBC for 4 years now and car sits a lot - cranks like a jet every time - no problems!

get the largest cold cranking rated battery that will fill the battery case and forget about it for 7 years. I personally prefer a Delco though.

Default optima all the way

I use optima red because I try to start my vett at least one a month during the winter to keep it in shape for the summer. It started my vett in the cold or in the rain as opposed to the the previous battery which I honestly cant even remember the name of. If how ever you don't need to start your car in any of these conditions then any battery will do. don't forget about your ignition coil.

Don't laugh guys but I have 2 Kirkland (Costco) batteries, one installed in the 78 L-82 and the other in a 1994 Mustang GT in 1998. Neither has ever died, required a charge, both have battery quick disconects-I drove both cars today. 12 years and counting!! Still going. I start both cars and drive them at least monthly even in the winter.
