argh, I can not get the oil filter off... I have tried just about everything that I can think of. I even tried sticking a screwdriver thru it and turning it with that. The oil filter just ripped to shreads :mad :mad Please tell me how I can get this PITA of an oil filter off so that I can get on with my work...
a long, long time ago in a place far, far away i was helping my dad (whom i affectionately refer to as 'mr. torquewrench') remove an oil filter on a 305 which he had installed. "hey, if a 1/2 turn is good, then a full turn must be better! right?" anyway, at the point your at now, the best suggestion i have would be to remove all of the outer metal from the housing exposing the mating flange. that is what i would call it, i don't know what the real name is for it. in a standard small block chevy, there are six holes in the top outer ring which is where the oil goes into the filter. your best bet would be to get a peice of steel like an 1/8 or 1/4" thick. drill a couple of holes in it that match a couple of the holes in the outer ring. you'll want to get a couple of 1/4-20 bolts (at least grade 5) that have an uncut shank so approximately 2" bolts. use two nuts on each one so that one nut is on top and the other is on bottom of the steel stock. then cut off the heads of the bolts because you won't want to use the threaded part for the oil filter. hope that explains it. like i said, i used this tool years ago and it worked but the idea is to not tighten the thing that tight! :smash:
Most of the auto parts stores sell a large wrench-type device that looks like channel locks. It is a large round lipped wrench that will grab any oil filter from the small import type to the one on your Corvette. I only use this type now and periodically I must really get into the gripping-like-mad routine, using two hands to get a stubborn oil filter off.
If all else fails, take a small, sharp chisel and put a medium cut into the metal band at the top of the filter. I am talking about the uppermost part of the filter where the rubber gasket goes. Once you have a deep enough cut, put a screwdriver in there and use it to gently tap the neck in a counterclockwise manner until you get it off.

Are you turning it the right way, If confused get your wrench and remove any bolt under the vette that will indicate the proper direction. Next step take a long screw driver and place it in one of the holes in the flange of the oil filter and use a hammer to tap the other end of the screw driver. This method has worked every time for me. When installing the new oil filter, oil the gasket and hand tighten only. Good luck
Too late now, but I use the sort of oil filter remover that goes on the bottom of the filter, and has sort of a coil spring that goes up and around the whole body. NEVER had a problem getting one off with that....
Depending on how much of the filter body is left- a piece of muffler strapping has worked for me. Put a piece around the filter nice and snug using a nut and bolt to secure it, leave a couple of inches at the end so that you can get vise grips on it and crank away. Good luck.
I used to have troubles wit that, but nowadaze I have two filter wrenches...one large for SBC size filters, and another small for foreign junk....
they are the compressing band type, with swivel handle...never failed yet, just need get a good grip by aligning things correctly the first time...hard to do but they work well....
Delt with too many of these! Just cut away the remaining filter body. Use an air chisel on the plate to turn it loose. Don't forget to lube the gskt on new filter w/new oil. Good Luck -Rod :chevy
I had one once that I had to strip away the remaining metal after the screwdriver trick didnt work and turned it loose with a pipe wrench. Let us know how you did!!! :smash: :smash:

I feel your pain. When I first got my '71 the filter was on so tight that even the end cap style wench just cuased the filter to twist in the middle. I endedup with a dremmel to cut a notch in the top most band to get a screwdriver in there and SLOWLY tap it loose. Good luck!
FINALLY that pos came off.... :smash: This morning i went and got a good oil filter wrench. It is basically a nylon strap stuck to a metal rod. you wrap it around the filter and crank down the rod with a 1/2" ratchet. So basically, something has to give.
well... the filter crushed in like an aluminum can. Then tried to use a chisel on the top plate. Pound on the chisel with 5lb sledge hammer. Still doesn't budge. At this point, most of the filter was ripped apart. So I ripped off the bottom half, exposing the top completely, stuck a needle nose pliers between two of the holes and tried to turn it off with that... still no go.
Then I stuck a breaker bar between the two teeth of the needle nose pliers. I pushed on the end of the breaker bar with every bit of strenght possible, it just budged very slowly around. Now normally, you would figure that after you turn the filter about 1/2 turn it would be pretty much loose enough to turn it with just the pliers and no breaker bar. Well it didnt loosen up untill about 1 1/2 turns. That thing was torqued on there like crazy. It took so much force to turn that thing, it bent the ends of the pliers.
I will be changing my own oil filter from now on thank you, no more st00pid oil change places with people that can't understand what hand tight means. :mad
So you are telling us that some 17 year old kid, earning $6 an hour, wrenched that thing on for you? :smash: As others have stated: a couple of drops of oil on the rubber gasket and about a half turn once the rubber connects with the base.
