My'73 Vette is running badly some of the time and other days it runs fine. The car dies at 55/60 MPH on a warm engine.Acts like it is flood out at the restart. Cars has Mallary distributer and coil, Holly carburator.
Fuel pressure gauge shows 7 ponds, never overheating. HELP this Vette has left us stranded a few times. We took this Vette to a mechanic and he kept it a few days, drove it and couldn't find any issues. Any ideas as to what is going on?
You have 1 of 2 problems: either fuel delivery or ignition. Your goal should be to identify which system is working in order to isolate your issue. I would check the components in each system before doing any parts replacement.
The fuel system would include visually looking inside the gas tank at the screen, replacing the fuel filter, look for leaks, and float levels in the carb. If you don't drive teh car much, you could have some debris/sediment in the carb.
The ignition system would include making sure all of the components are good: points (if not electronic), cap, rotor, wires, coil with volt meter, look at 12 volt wires to be sure they are not deteriorated.
Another thing to look at is vacuum leaks, especially into the headlight system. Pull the hose to the headlight system and plug the tee fitting and see if the drivability issues persist. If you have cruise control (don't know if that was available in 73) you might have leaks there, too. Same for power brake booster. Good idea to read the plugs as well and see if any are discolored. I found that I had some loose intake bolts on my 77 at the front of my engine that were allowing crankcase gases to be sucked into the #1 and #2 cylinders and fouling plugs every few hundred miles.
