The tach on my 71 just crapped out on me. This is my first classic car project and i'm looking for some advice. The car had been sitting in a garage for the past couple years and with the exception of headers, is pretty much stock. After a new battery, oil change, eviction of the mice, and some general clean up, I drove the car about 100 miles to my garage. The car seems to be running fine and sounds good. During the last 10 miles of my trip I stopped to get gas. Once back on the road I noticed the tach was not working. Suggestions?
First thing I would do is make sure everything to the tach is hooked up properly. If so, then I think there are some tests you can do to see if your actual tach is working properly. I'll do a quick search and try to find it.
Disconnect cable at distributor and spin inner cable with a drill doesn't have to be too fast. See if tach is moving. If it is then its in the distributor, either the shaft gear or the brass part with gear. If You can't get the tach to move then its either the cable, connection or tach.
My money is on the cable. I broke a number of those until I got that elbow fitting from Mid america. The nice thing is, it has a grease fitting right on the elbow to keep it full o grease!
Could be the cable, could be the gauge, most probably is the gear drive inside the distributor has packed it in.
Replaced many a gear on these. The shaft and gear usually tear each other up and you will end up replacing both of them.
If you have to use a 90 degree adapter your distributor is clocked in wrong. This is a fix but not the correct fix. It will break the cable if the distributor is not in the proper position.
