Default Some Afterfire

The car was set up perfect, timing wise and running great - still is, but I took off the stock mufflers last weekend and put on new Magnaflows. LOVE the sounds, feels stronger to, but now I get some Afterfire on downshifting.

I've checked for leaks and I don't think I have any, so I am thinking it is too lean. I have the Edelbrock 600CFM Carb. To experiment and try riching it up, how much do I turn out the 2 screws on the front? 1/2 a turn each at a time?

Also, I think I am going to leave my stock Ram Horn exhaust Manifolds on instead of headers, just because I am a sunny day, Downtown City driver and I don't really see a need for them. But, there is a heat riser on the passenger side I think that someone has tried to wire in place - should it be UP or DOWN?

by afterfire, do you mean popping/crackling? I turned in both screws to gently seat them and backed out an even 3 1/2 turns each as a starting point, then adjusted for max vacuum. Solved all my problems (and I also run Magnaflows). An easy fix. As for the heat riser (I now have a spacer) there will be others here who should chime in as to the correct way to wire it open - if you so desire. I would start off with richening up the carb since you seem to indicate the problem started when you changed muffler...

Mine is a "sunny day driver" also and I kept the cast ram manifolds.
When the lever on the heat riser is down it is fully open.

It was a simple fix, I just backed out the mixture screws 1/4 turn each on the front of the carb. No more "popping" during downshifts.

Thanks to all!
