Hello, My shifter starts rattling a bit when I hit speeds of 50 mph or greater. I installed a minor shift kit and changed the ball, spring, reverse lock T, and rod. Still rattles, does anyone have some suggestions? Thank you.
stock shifter is mounted directly to the transmission, if you have vibration from
Motor or Drivetrain, ... it will rattle !
replace all the shifter clips with spring clips to minimize.
Years ago I had a 65 Pontiac Gran Prix with a "Super Duty" 421 and Borg-Warner T-10 4 speed.
Shifter started rattling on a trip up to Vancouver. I pulled into a full service gas station (yeah this was way back), and the guy helped me out by putting the car up on the lift.
Turns out that the tranny case had started to separate and all the fluids had drained. He made a gasket with a split on the top, slipped in in position and filled the fluids. All for free...
The next day in Vancouver the upper mount for the generator broke.
Went to a gas station and a guy there found one off of a junker and put it on for me. Coat was $10.00...
Kinda like those canucks...
Moral of the story? Check that everything is tight under the car...

The stock shifter on a 71 is mounted to the frame cross member.
Spring clips will minimize rattle though.
Question is, what's rattling; the shifter handle OR the T-handle.
Usually it's the T-handle which can be rectified with a better (longer/stiffer) lockout spring.
Sounds like it is rattling inside the ball on shifter handle or maybe T-Handle. The noise is definately coming from up top and not down towards tranny. Changing the spring is an interesting thought. Do you have any suggestions where to get a stiffer spring or what to use? Thank you.
