It is much easier to remove the springs with the compressor. I only compressed mine a little bit when I removed them. I think that you could remove them without the compressor. Installing them would be hard without the compressor.

Yeah, you can remove them fine without a compressor, but can't install them without. If you are doing the VB&P front transverse mono spring install (like me tomorrow finally!) then you dont need it.

I didn't need them for reinstalling the 460 springs either. I only cut off a half of a loop too. I guess it depends on the brand and rate of the spring.

It can be done W/O a spring compressor. You need a floor jack and some chain(for safety). It is a easier to install it with a compressor to keep the spring in the pocket, but it can be done.

Just be careful if you use a chain. Make sure it's sufficient to hold the pressure of the spring. A weak link or small chain could result in damage to you or your car.
I bought a coil spring compressor from Sears for about $35. May be something thats used once in a blue moon, but it's nice to have when needed.

Thanks for the advice on the "chain"!! Damn spring compressor "slipped" and the whole suspension assembly expanded, sounded like a gunshot. Without the safety chain the spring might have killed me! Other than this...looking good so far. Cut 3/4 of a coil because my front end was WAY high, and I wanted a mean low stance. I'll provide progress updates and photos when done!! Thanks for the help! :flag

Done! Looks considerably better, but still not low enough. Cut 3/4 coil out of each side. Think I'll drive her around for a week or so to see if any rubbing or trouble develops. Probably will cut another 1/2 coil next weekend and install the grade 8 bolts (longer) in the rear. Thanks for all the help! :cheers:

Not sure how it happened. Heard the "boom" and the compressor was just laying loose inside the spring. Strange...yes...scary....YES! Just use a chain to secure it is my advice! Still kinda spooky though! :eek:
