Rule of thumb, larger diameter primaries move the point at which peak torque is achieved to a higher RPM, while longer primaries put more area under the torque curve below that peak and less above it. Consider primary diameter as more or less being the fulcrum of the torque curve and primary length as tipping the curve one way or the other on that fulcrum. IMCO, manufacturers doing a pretty good job of sizing them for given applications, collector size only becomes a significant consideration in highly developed open racing systems.

Listen to SkunkWorks! On your engine 1 5/8s will be just fine!
Listening to SkunkWorks will result in a large price reduction! I've always run 1 5/8 on mild hp motors, I just don't want to be sorry down the line that I didn't get the "tuned" headers for this Vette, that's why this Forum can be a great place.

Of course, the definition of "mild" varies, but you can send my commission via PayPal.
On a mild 350 the 1 5/8" primaries are not only acceptable, they are preferred.
Additionally the Hooker Comp series headers have thicker tubes that super comps, so they should last a bit longer.
