Default Proper Cleaning Before Installing Carpet

I finally removed the old carpet and now have new carpet for my car! It also looks like a bit of oil dripped on the driver's floorboard. My questions are:

1. What type of cleaner do you recommend to clean and to remove any oil residue?

2. It almost seems as if there is a bit of a soft spot on the floorboard now. Not sure if this could be a small spot of oil. If so, is there anything I can use to harden this up? I appreciate any advice you can offer me. Thanks.

I use formula 409 as a degreaser and use WD-40 to remove sticky stuff.

Thank you. Any ideas about using some type of hardener?

GooGone will get rid of the carpet glue. After you soften it, use a wire wheel. Just put on your safety goggles, fire up the drill, and use the wire wheel to clean off anything you don't want on there. It took me a full day to do each side of mine. Then I glued Reflectix to the floor & put on Al Knoch's carpet. Came out great.

If your car is a 1971 do not use a wire wheel on the fiberglass floorboards, it will fuzz them up badly. If you want a quick way to stiffen the floor whether they're steel or not, visit your local auto parts store for a fiberglass repair kit to include resin, hardener and either cloth or mat. Clean the glue and any oils from an area somewhat larger than the soft spot using lacquer thinner or acetone. Cut three pieces of fiberglass material as large as the clean spot and mix some resin per the box instructions. Lay the first patch on the floor and wet the glass by dabbing resin at it with a cheap bristle paint brush with the bristles cut down to about 1 inch. While still wet, add the second and third layer and dab. The glass will start to look translucent when fully wetted out... stop at that point since the strength in the repair comes from the glass not the resin. Let cure and paint or glue carpet on top.
