Okay, I am back to working on my non-functioning speedo now ....
1980 L48 stock speedo, WITH cruise control (two cables) ....
Does not work at all when driving, but when I checked it last, I could put a drill on tranny end, and I could get it up to 30mph ...... so unless the speedo gear is slipping, or not "grabbing" the tranny gear, I am at a loss .....
Ideas and how to test, from any of you speedo experts???
Yes, that is the "housing" for the green speedo gear ......
If it looks like the link and its aluminum I would replace it with the link I sent. The aluminum one wears oblong and the small gear moves away from the internal drive gear and slips. The one in the link is steel and keeps the 2 gears in contact.
1) Tested the cable from Cruise to speedo with a drill - works fine
2) Tested the cable from transmission to speedo with a drill - works fine
3) Tested the green 28tooth gear by putting drill on end, through the housing, using both cables, - works fine
4) took a little peak with a light and mirror into 10tooth drive gear on governer - does not look straight, but can only see small section of it and angle is not good, but THINK my gov gear has gone WARPED.
Will drain the tranny and get the gov out to inspect closer ..... question is now, IF that is the case, why has it gone bad? Has something else come loose, to cause gear mis-alignment on my 200-4r??
Both drive and driven gears look fine. The only thing that I can tell that could be issue, is that the little square hole inside the gear seems a tad too big ..... will see if a small piece of alum tape around the square speedo cable end will fix it, as a test anyway .....
If that happens to be it, I will replace the gear!
