Default Timing problem

I've read just about everything on this forum concerning the timing of a SBC 350. But I've run into a real head-scratcher. I set the total timing (vac line disconnected and plugged) on my 1980 to 36 degrees at 2500 RPM. At idle, the advance is almost 30 deg.! I tried lighter springs on the mech. advance, but still the difference is only a few degrees. I even took the weights off and wired up the centrifugal solid and set my initial timing at 16 deg. When I returned it to normal (stock weights and springs), I was at 28 deg. I though the centrifugal advance was supposed to give 20 deg from idle to WOT? Any ideas. Idle was at 750 RPM. It has an RV cam in it.

What is your timing at idle with the vac advance hooked up? I am confused.

I'll have to check. I usually keep it plugged while tuning. I also posted a similar thread a few minutes ago since I thought this one didn't send. My apologies to the forum.

Maybe the centrifugal weights are getting hung up and giving you too much advance.
Did you try removing the weights and springs and see what your initial is then.

Just read the other post, without weights you get proper idle advance with weights timing jumps up, got to be the weights hanging up.
