I removed the valve cover to replace the valve stem seals in my 81 and there is about 3/8 of an inch of sediment at the lower part of the head. It smells like burnt oil and comes off with just a wipe. When I get all the seals replaced and start the engine I am going to change the oil and filter, does anyone know if there is anything that I can put in the engine to get rid of this mess?
I was surprised to see how cheap a set (16) of seals were, I got them at NAPA for $11.40 and they are made by Clevite. I did not get the valve cover gaskets yet because they only had caulk gaskets and everyone on the forum seems to use Felpro rubber gaskets. Thanks in advance for any help.
I'm not much on additives. However, I was reading some threads on a Diesel forum and the guys were raving about a product called "SeaFoam". It's a fuel/oil additive designed to clean/lubricate the top end. Supposedly it works well as an oil additive to remove deposits etc.
If you had that much in there I would suggest hat you start changing your oil a little sooner. Best thing that I have used is transmission fluid. You ever notice why trannies are so nice and clean inside? Its the fluid. The fluid has detergent in it for just this purpose. Drain 1 and a half quarts of engine oil or do it during and oil change is preferable add the same amount trans fluid and drive normally. Normal meaning dont beat the ***** off the car for the next 500 miles and check the oil at every fill up to see where your at on the stick :yesnod: :seeya
