Metallic (clanking) Noise
Hi folks, I am new hear and recently purchased my first '73 with a 350, 4 speed. Yesterday out of no where it started making this metallic clank when you get on the gas from a standstill. I haven't noticed it in reverse, only in 1st from a dead stop. If you pull up to a traffic light and leave the clutch in it does not clank when you start moving....pull up, take it out of gear, release the clutch and when you start moving...."clank"!!
I've seen a number of posts here which indicate that it could be a u-joint or a front differential seal. Any bets on where to start or other suggestions on things to look into?

Thanks....will (or can) they act up intermittently? Yesterday I took her out and the 'clank' went to a knock that's now gone. Best I could tell it was coming from the right rear wheel area so I'm thinking you're right and it's the u joints but wasn't sure. If memory serves me correctly when they start going the noise can come and go but was looking for some confirmation.

The noise comes from them being loose, but sometimes the needles start moving around and taking up space they weren't meant to and they can seem not so loose. Anyway they're the easiest thing to check.
