Default 68 l79...

hi,
i'm new here, this is my 1st post on this forum...

i have a 68 with a L79, close ratio muncy, and 3.70 posi,,that was rebuilt a while ago with flat top pistons, and regular composite (not shims), head gaskets, so i'm sure its not 11.1 cr anymore,,, it also has an original rebuilt q-jet on an original manifold, and hooker headers running thru an undercar exhaust system...
i recently replaced teh original points distributor, (original is very worn & won't hold accurate dwell) with a chevy hei, from a late 70's (i believe) 305 or 350... i went thru the distributor, disassembled & cleaned it, checked for worn bushings, re shimmed it, replaced the coil, wires & plugs, gapped at .045...

it doesn't seem to accelerate like i expect it to,,, i need to find teh right combination of timing, and advance weights and springs, along with the right vacuum canister for this engine... will teh original vac can from teh points distrib, work on the hei?
any help will be welcomed,,,
thanks in advance

The problem with an HEI on a non smog motor is the weights move to far creating too much advance. You have to find a way to stop the weights from coming out too far. We used to braze the stop side of the pin so it could only advance so far. It wasn't the perfect solution but the cars would run way better that way. Im sure if You search enough there must be new weights or offset pins that can be used now?

thanks for teh reply...

i replaced teh weights with a set (with 3 sets of springs) that i got from summit, when i ordered the coil and other ign parts... would putting a piece of tubing over the pins do the same thing? how does the vac can figure in this. the original one is stamped 15,, the hei is stamped 20, that the total vac advance, correct??
thanks again..
