It is not the same size. There are people that make plates to cover it, something like acdelete.com. You can't use a heater outer box with an a/c inside box so you really need a whole setup.
It sounds like you and I are thinking along the same lines......I removed ALL the ac components off my 1981 and plan on making a steel block-off plate (no heater).
Later when I have the cash, I plan on a Vintage Air set up......but for now, just a block off plate.
My latest idea is to place the outer heater only box with a blower motor......thereby making it look stock even though it doesnt have heat. (Im in Texas) If I can find a cheap outer box, I'm going with this idea.
This pic is off my daughters 1976 heater only Corvette. I think the hole and mount bolts are the same for ac and nonAC cars.
