I have a 68 vette with the L-79 engine, after about 20 miles it will start missing, back fire and quit. Last time it did it, it wouldn't start so I checked the voltage at the coil and it was only about 5 volts. I ran a jumper and put 12 volts directly to the coil and it fired right up but when I removed the jumper it started missing. The resistor wire at the coil get real hot, Can I eliminate the resistor wire and use a resistor block? Where does the resistor wire get its 12 volts from? Thanks, Keith
There should be another wire there that connects to the starter. This wire will be covered with cloth. Check the connection on this wire at the starter.
I had the same problem, when cold it would start and run great, but after 15-20 minutes, and the engine heated up, the engine would kind of weaken, and eventually start to miss. It would reach the point of backfiring and then wouldn't start or run until it cooled down.
I believe my problem was caused by this connection to the starter. It was very frayed (probably about 50% gone). Because this connection was bad, it was creating additional heat/resistence. And this additional resistence was causing my problem.
the resistor wire starts at the "R"un post at the starter. it has about 2 ohms resistance. chances are the wire is ok, and it's the spade connector that's bad. it's a steel wire and can't be soldered. cut off both ends and crimp new connectors, and check the voltage. it should be about 10V.
