i would still gut the old cat put it back on ,cost zero.then i would buy a new one for when you test .the old ones did a terrilble job .the new ones do a good job and do not restrict the flow.
you can buy a duel exhaust from the corvette catalogs and put it on your self.but if you have to have a cat for emissions testing you or the muffler guy can put on a new cat that will help your performance.
lets start again .you want a duel exhaust that has a removeble cat?if you want duel exhaust you will have duel cats .do you have a stock motor?if you dont have a lot of hp the duel exhaust wont help you that much .the best thing to do is have the old bad cat upgraded to the new stuff because you are still being tested .now if the old cat has been cut off.....and you want a shop to work on it ...tell them it is a 1972.
The easiest way to have a 'test' pipe made is to cut it off with a saws-all or similar device without damaging either end and have them make a pipe matching the old converter with their pipe bender....We made many pipes this way and the customer went home and installed them... out of sight, out of mind....for those shops that cant remove them....

...or you can buy a test pipe cheap on ebay that is already made....and send it back if it does not fit. To me...its not that expensive because my time is worth more than removing the converter ...measuring, cutting and fitting a test pipe and then having someone weld it for me. I'd rather pay $60 for the pipe and just install. By the way.....I'm not the seller or maker...or friends with the person making these. I know I'm new here so I dont want anyone to think I'm here to promote somebodys product. I just think this is cheap and easy if it fits...
