Default Power to manual steering

Will I need to purchase a new Center Link if I am going to go from power to manual steering?

EDIT: Or, does anyone know of a company that manufactures a MANUAL rack and pinion steering.

I think Flaming River has a manual rack for Vettes. If you use the stock system you would probably be better off buying a new center link. Borgeson has an adapter that is essentially the right side of the PS valve with a fixed stud, if you wanted to keep the PS center link. I believe the Pittman arm is also different for manual steering. You also have to use the other set of holes in the steering arm at the wheel end of the linkage.

Default Manual Steering

I have been thinking of installing the Steeroids manual steering also. They told me to go with the power steering one and use the hose and loop it back to the other port on the Steeroids unit. It has been awhile since I talked to them but I believe that is what they said and it is not suppose to hurt it and you get a faster ratio with that one. Flamming Rivers doesn't work with the Hooker side pipe headers. If anyone has done this I would like to know how it worked cause I autocross my Vette and am looking to do this soon I hope.

That looks like the one. It may be available for less $ at Summit Racing or Jeg's.

Default Why go manual???

Jigowatt, steveski,

Why not go straight to Borgeson and fit their # 800108 steering box? It looks to be the same part as Eckler's # 54087. Despite what Ecklers say about having to replace the centre link or drag link with a manual one, their part #54158 is designed to bolt on to your original power centre link, after you have removed your control valve.

Borgeson know what they're talking about, as they manufacture the products right there in the USA. Unlike the factory power steering with a 16:1 ratio and full power boost at all speeds and steering wheel positions, the Borgeson unit is a 21st Century box with an integral power ram and control valve that varies the amount of boost, depending on the steering wheel position.

It gives you a sporty 12.7:1 ratio, which will markedly improve your autocross driving, and will provide almost zero boost in the straight ahead position, but the boost increases the more the wheel is turned towards the lock position, just like in a modern car.

Before you pull the trigger, Jigowatt, try to get a drive of a car with a Borgeson box fitted. You will NOT want to go back to manual steer after that!

Highly recommened moving the outer tie-rods to the rear most position on the steering knuckles if staying with OEM type manual steering box, unless you install a bump steer kit. Front most holes yield 17.6:1 (quick), rear most holes 20.2:1, and bump steer blocks ~18.9:1 with OEM box.

Yes, for an OEM manual steering setup you really ought to get that HD center link redvetracr has available. (I'd pick it up myself for a spare if my budget allowed.)
