"oil level in the steering box"? a Corvette steering box takes grease NOT oil.
I stand corrected as the proper term is steering gear assembly. The lubricant is GM specification GM4673M. Looks as if it is leaking pitman shaft seal.
I'd agree. Took it out today for :15 minutes; parked in garage and have 1 drip right under that spot. Almost like oil. Seems a like a leaking seal. Friday morning it's going into local Corvette shop for oil change and quick look over. In PA, regular registration requires inspection so we'll be checking out a few things. Better to start safe and leverage some local qualified Corvette experts.
Thanks for everyones input. I'll post the final verdict.
Answer is 38 year old steering box seals are leaking what appears to be melted grease.
Also needs upper and lower tie rod bushings.
Trans gasket replacement
Rear trailing arm bushing
and then, the mount under the radiator is about rusted & done.
Need to replace the whole piece.

1 Might be a good time to rebuild the whole box, there are plenty of how to's on that.
2 Might be time for all new bushings and ball joints. Did he mean new tie rod ends and new upper and lower A arm bushings.
3 Trans gasket and a new filter every 30,000 miles might make the trans last longer.
4 Check the run out on the rotor, it might be time for new bearing while your in there. That's also a good time to change the stub axle U joints, and replace the shocks and strut rod bushings.
5 There are plenty of Vettes with rusty radiator supports.
Are you going to do some or all of the work yourself?
Regards, Pete.
I'm going to have the work done. Should have mentioned that the steering box will be rebuilt too. I'll hold on the rusty radiator support for the moment. ... it was control arm bushings now that I think about it. I'm not set-up for some of this stuff and when you factor in alignments etc... we'll leave this to the pro's. Been busy chasing the knicks and tinkering with this and that..
