I have the CTD code 300hp 350 out of my 1970. I am getting ready to rebuild it and it is my first. All of the rebuild kits seem generic. Where should I look to get parts to rebuild a numbers matching motor? Also, I was thinking about a hydraulic roller cam. I am curious to see what others have done and what the purists have to say about messing with it. Any help is welcome.
Find a good local machine shop to help you out and give you a much better running combination than you can find by reading internet postings. I would probably drop a 3.75" stroker crank in that motor and be happy with the increased HP it would make.
As mentioned....you just have to decide which way you want to go. Stay purely stock as built, or begin upgrades. Either way, you nailed it, there are a lot of generic parts out there for 350's and a lot of it is pure junk. You will want to stay with the better names. For example, *rebuilder* pistons are usually shorter to allow for block decking and using them usually ends up with pistons that create a lot less compression.
Same can be said for lifters....a lot of imported junk.
It's easy to upgrade the motor and remain stock looking externally..or just do a simple cylinder bore with good pistons and rings and freshen with bearings etc.
