Default Top end kit

I have been looking at this kit for my 1979 L48 but I need to know if it will require and further rebuilding of the engine or other critical parts. Your thoughts and other suggestion would be helpful! Thanks

Have you done a leak down test on the motor or at least a compression check. No way to answer your question without far more details on present engine condition. You add this to a tired bottom end you will be doing a rebuild soon.

A lot of the guys steer away from the kits and opt for mix and matching their own components to get the best performance for their application. I know the kits are easier, but you may want to look at building your own "kit". I would determine your budget first, then post a thread to help you pick the parts based on your setup. It would at least give you some choices.

That is the edelbrock performance RPM package its not to bad i would go with the plain performer package not a RPM package as it will change the RPM curve to make the motor run and pull its might at around 4000 red line at 6500. the plain power package keeps the stock RPM's.

Also that intake is the performer RPM air gap intake its a no go under a stock L-48 hood.

Also risk of bottom end failure do to the new red line and the L-48 cast crank and 2 bolt mains.

Also you probably won't get or see that kinda HP gain as the L-48 has dished smogger low compression pistons in it. If you was doing a L-82 with flat tops in it maybe you might get that with edelbrocks so called bolt on performance.

Thats my opinion.

If he gets the edelbrock heads with the small chambers (64cc). That would put him about 10 to 1 compression. Go to the Edelbrock web site and check out the dyno curves. Edel. packages are know for there great low end torque and good top end without loosing driveability. Some people feel the need to get crazy and run into problems and if your a good wrench then thats OK but if you can't blow apart your carb and tune it or recurve the distributor to dial it in perfect I would go with the Edelbrock/Summit kit Much less of a head ache.
PS as said before, you may need a different aircleaner or manafold...

OE L48 has dished pistons ... w/ 64cc, OE L48'll make about 9:1 at best (not 10:1). RPM cam way too much for 9:1 street car. As others say ... don't get a TE kit ... better to get some education, then mix n match.

a cheap but good homemade "kit" for L48 is a pair of L98 aka zz4 heads (58cc) and a summit K1103 or K1104 cam &lifter kit along with YOUR intake manifold.
