Default Temp Gauge

Is there any way to tell if my temperature gauge is working in my '73? It's a pretty new gauge, needle doesn't move when engine is warm, there is power to the center wire of the plug.

Disconnect the sender wire, turn the key to "on" and check the guage. It should be pegged at the left. Then, touch the sender wire to ground (engine block, etc). With the key on the needle should peg to the right. If you have both conditions the guage is probably o.k. Check the Willcox site for testing the resistance of the sender vs guage reading to be sure to have the sender matched to the guage.

But if you have power at the center terminal at the gauge you have a problem. The center term should be a black wire and is the entire center cluster ground.
The pink wire is supposed to be hot. The green goes out to the engine and connects to the sender.

Thanks X2!! It is the pink wire that is hot and the gauge did respond to the test. I do have all new wiring, so I'm wondering if it could be the sender unit. Can someone with a '73 tell me what the plug for the sender looks like. Mine is a flat tab type.
