Pelletized Cat?

On my 80 the stock cat. had the pellet's in it. There's a knock out if you want to remove or replace them. I removed them, but the internals of the cat. are baffled with perferated walls still causing a lot of restiction. I wound up taking a heavy duty drill motor and 2 1/4 hole saw and cut straight thru.
Yes, all GM cat's of the '75 - '82 usage are the same design, and are the 'pelletized' type. The internal design is baffled w/louvers thru these baffles allowing gasses to pass. The pellets are loose, moving around and would eventually break down or wedge into the louvers and passages. This in turn would restrict the passage of the gasses, causing restriction. Some 'plug-up' totally, and others just partially. I've seen cars come in on 'the hook' with a no-start condition caused by this (a totally plugged cat). Seen others 'blow' the access plug out of the bottom of the cat from too much restrictive pressure.
So if you're running the orig cat on your car, I suggest replacing it with one of the 'high-flow' models avail. You could be running around with a partially restrictive cat, and not know it. This could also cause a low or false vacuum reading, and if severe enough, will effect your vac oper accessories.
Good Luck -Rod :chevy
