Now What, steering box pics

When swapping control valves and finding out my pitman arm hole was enlarged, I changed the pitman arm and now I find this play in the pitman shaft. I dont know if it was there before but it moves up and down about 1/4 inch.

What could cause it and could it have been there before I messed with it?

When I push up on it.

I think the center alignment bolt of the steering box is missing or broken, you have to stop driving your car till you fix it.

So is this what happens when you remove the pitman arm by hitting the puller stud with a hammer to break it loose?

What should I do? I haven't looked at the top of the box yet.

There must be a lot of play where the lash adjusting screw is attached to the pitman shaft.
Or the cover has has stripped threads for the screw.

I lowered the car and looked at the top. The aluminum cover is broke.

Replace the steering box and the pitman arm. Put the hammer away in a safe place.

You need a new box. I suggest that you look up www.borgeson.com, they have rebuilt standard boxes or a new integral power steering box that will transform the driving sensation of your car.

The Borgeson boxes come with a factory three year warranty.
