82- Will not start with Spark Control Connected

82- Will not start with Spark Control Connected
I am working on getting this 82 running right.
I've replaced the fuel pump- the car now runs. When I first got it running, the brown Spark Control wire was already disconnected. Now that it was running, the initial timing was set to 10 degrees advanced. The distributor was tighened down, the timing again verified as 10 degrees.
I then connected the brown wire and attempted to run the car again: it wants to start, but will not.
With the wire disconnected, it runs- with the timing at 10 degrees.
What to now check? Should I replace the control unit in the distributor? Or...?
