Default Black Book numbers question

I have a 75 L82 4 speed. I don't have my black book here at work so I'm working from memory. There were about 2372 L82's made in 75 and there were 1000 or so M21 4 speeds. I'm perty sure mine has the M21, so is mine one of 1000 or so or 1 of 2000 or so L82's? I thought that I had read that only L82's got the M21 is that right? So were the other 1000 or so L82's automatic trans?

Default Re: Black Book numbers question (Paul 75 L82)

Paul,
According to my Black Book, the RPO M21 was only available on L82 equipped Corvettes in '75. There were 1057 M21 transmissions installed in '75, so if you do have the M21, your Corvette is one of 1057.

There were a total of 38,465 Corvettes produced in 1975. 1057 had the M21 (L82), 28,473 M40 automatics, so 8,935 had the base M20 tranny. With these numbers you could assume (SWAG) that the remaining 1315 L82 Corvettes would have been equipped with the same ratio (M40 to M20) of transmissions.

Qikstik, Thanks. I think that mine is a M21, but when I had the trans out for clutch replacement I could find the ID numbers.

Hey Paul (good name - mine too  )
...the #'s for your tranny are stamped on the passenger side of the case.
It'll take some looking & you should see the part # too (39#####)
...anyways there should be something like P08....(it'll start with a letter followed by #'s - tranny type + date of manufacture, etc.)

Almost have of these above are Autos ! - so...your assumption is correct - either M-21 or Automatic :yesnod:
