Default Brake Clunk

I've been chasing this noise for 2 years on my '76. When I start the car and back out of the driveway, I hear a distinct but not loud clunk when I push in the clutch and tap the brakes, that seems to come from the rear of the car. I've checked everything I can think of, including all the U-joints and brakes. Any ideas?

Really? The only normal thing that I can think of would be the posi unit. If that's it, then I can finally sleep at night!! Thanks.

The brake pads shifting in the caliper sometimes make a clunk.
The azzend of a vette has a lot of stuff that when shifting the weight can make noises.
If the parking brake shoes are hanging slightly it can cause a clunk.
Once upon a time I had a bent shock that was causing a clunk.
To be honest its endless the things in the rear that can make noises.
Have you done a rebuild on the rear suspension ?
It very well could be normal noises from the rear.

Its the brake pad. There is a gap between the ends of the pad and caliper. That causes the slap when you apply the brakes. It slides back and forth. Lots of people spray sticky stuff on the backing to quiet them, but that is not recommended. They should slide back and forth. The sticky will cause the pistons to twist and the calipers will leak. So, as I said, leave it alone and drive.

If you want to be sure you can slide some shim material between the end of the pad and the caliper and see if that stops the clunk. If it does stop the clunk , remove the shim material and sleep well.

Thanks guys. Slept like a baby last night. Then today I blew a tire on my truck! Now that's a noise that I can diagnose!! BANG....flop,flop.
