Default Ram Jet 350

I am giving serious thought to installing the Ram Jet 350 in my 79 L82. Car already has a 700R4 installed. Would like to know if anyone on this forum has any experience with this engine combo. Have been reading you guys and gals for a couple of months now and have grown in knowledge and respect of your opinions. Car has real good engine now but always like more!!

Thanks

There have been a few posts about it, but I don't believe anyone here has actually installed one (now watch someone prove me wrong :D ). It sounds like a simple enough install, I would like to see one too.

Welcome to the forum Ronny! I been I'balling that 350 ramjet also. I took some messurments and it looks like its going to fit in my vette with the L48 hood :D There is a manul that you can order for that motor and I think its a good idea to have first. It will probably be next year before I can get that motor. I think you will be the first to do it. Send lots of photos on the install. :seeya

Shouldn't be a problem. The only down side of the Ram Jet is tuneablity. Once installed, plug in, set timing, and that it. If you decide to modify the motor later on, you will open a huge can of worms. There are several companies working on closed loop harness for the motor. Call S & P and ask if the have done that yet.

How about a zz4 or 383 with a new Holley Stealth Ram Commander 950 setup? It looks better than the Ram Jet (IMNSHO), works with up to 950 horsepower and is fully programmable via a laptop. Also does data logging, controls nitrous, and can use a narrow band o2 sensor as a wide band. All that for only $2200, including a fuel pump.

What about the ZZ4 with hot cam and rockers-should get over 400hp for the same price. Also, the Fast burn ZZ motor is 385hp. Both should be more tunable and easier to install.

The Ramjet 350 would be a sweet motor. And I too am interested in a possible swap with this engine.

Agreed with most about the future upgrades being a PITA. It has a two bolt main as well. I do however think that having a factory built (GM) fuel-injected 350 would be real smooth trouble free operation for many , many years of corvette fun. Not the most powerful motor but thats not always #1 on peoples minds. I think the power that it provides would be sufficent for me, going from 165hp stock L48.

The main questions I have is clearance issues with the hood. And if I would need all new engine accessories. I know the ZZ4 should be able to accept all the brackets and pumps that I currently have on but not sure about the Ramjet.

Bear in mind that the ZZ4 comes with Vortec heads so it won't accept standard manifolds (like most MPFI manifolds) unless the heads are swapped.

I know several friends that have installed them in street rods and love them. Never heard one complaint about them. Of course these cars are cruisers and not race cars.

Thanks Zora_rules, I should have it in about 3 weeks and hopefully running soon after that with a new torque converter, new cam, ported heads and some other goodies. I'm hoping for 11s on drag radials and decent gas mileage with the EFI & 700r4. I'll definately post some pics and times! The car hasn't been running in about 6 months and I'm really getting anxious.

Robzr,

No all to well how you feel. I finally had my car running and driveable again last Sat. Take it out, get on the access road next to the freeway....have a little fun running through the gears...gas up, return home all set to cruise a little over an hour to the drags the next day...and INSURANCE EXPIRED SAT :(. I was real bummed to say the least, but I now have insurance again, and will be driving soon!

Yes definitly post those pics that sounds like a Kick Butt Setup you got going...11s in a Shark would be real :cool.

I though the ZZ4 had L98 Alum Vette Heads not vortecs, am I wrong? Could be.

thats what i have and love it!! Would probably be even better with a Holley Commander 950 like robzr said or an Accel SuperRam.

Hate to correct a fellow forum member but the ZZ4 comes with the Corvette L98 aluminum heads that use the old style intake manifold. The Ramjet 350, 350 HO and HT 383 all have Vortec heads.

I like that the Ramjet 350 is ready to run. Granted an aftermarket EFI is more tunable, but I would only want to do this once, and the GM Marine engineers probably have put together a good running complete package that I couldn't "improve" upon without messing up something else. I would like to be sure it fits under a 73 hood first. What is the price difference between that motor and an LS-1? Joe

go to http://www.sallee-chevrolet.com they have a bunch of engine combos that they build up from crate motors and the also carry the standard crate motors. The LS-1 would be great but I think it sets you back $8,00 or more and it would take some mods to the way it is mounted because it is a new generation of Chevy small block and dosen't have the old engine mount style. I like the ZZ4..it is upgradable, 4 bolt mains and it takes all the accessories that Chevy ever put on a small block. The ZZ4 does come with L98 Corvette Aluminium Heads.

 Sorry it took so long to get back, been working on the beast. Lots of good advice to digest but Budman said it best, put it in and RIDE, I have opened to many cans of worms in my life. I have looked at both Holley and Edelbrock EFI, both seem to be good setups and I realy don't want to do anything but cruise in the vette. Right now the push is on to get the thing to the paint shop for a fresh coat. Everytime I turn around I uncover some other problem that needs fixed, but I wanted a hobby, should have stuck with airplanes, I think they may be cheaper.

Thanks for the help and advice

SORRY GUYS!!! :bb My hands are in the air and I'm stepping away from the crack pipe. I had been looking into the 350 Deluxe recently and since that was last in my mind..... brainfart.

Please DO correct me when I'm wrong. Every once and a while I get some strange notion in my head and end up saying something stupid like I did. I'm one of those strange people who like being corrected. :)

The latest issue of Car Craft has a pretty good article about installing a Ram Jet into a 60's chevy sedan.
