I wish I had a picture of the guy I bought my 72 from. He would make a perfect poster rep for "Bubba" Wore bib overhalls, one strap not connected, not to bright looking, screwed up everything he touched, painted all of his cars the same color red and not to well either. He had about ten different cars, 3 or 4 vettes, several 70's muscle cars, a big block El Camino, and a 40's Chev Coupe, all painted the same red. Must have bought a 55 gal drum of it at farm and fleet, and every car had the same problems with bubbles in the paint. When I picked up my vette he was in the process of restoring a 1953 Chev covertible with power top. Had already put a 283 in it and was going to paint it ...........red.
Just remember, there is a little 'Bubba' in all of us...
Anybody who has something from Home Depot on
their car may be considered a Bubba, and lets face
it, some 'home grown' solutions are really the most
efficient ones (READ: Water Heater Wrap under the carpet
to stop that damnable cabin heat)
I'll bet we could come up with enough Bubba definitions to rival Jeff Foxworthys' bit "You know you're a redneck when.........)No offense to all you rednecks out there, actually I'm pretty sure I'm one.
I have seen bubba and he is ......... me! I bet anybody that has their car restored by others would consider my attempts at maintenance a really big 'bubba'.
1- I work on my car and I'm not a certified mechanical (but certifiable perhaps)
2- Parts that I replace are not 'correct' but instead come from Discount Auto or Advance Auto
3- Genuine GM to me means over-priced and made in Mexico
4- I'd rather get my car mechanicals working good than to finish the interior (a project never done)
5- When I remove my OEM parts for good replacements (Edelbrock, Accell, Dynomax, etc.), I don't hermetically seal them in a time capsule for the next guy; I either give them to others on the forum or they go to the curb
6- I'm on a first-name basis with Dr Rebuild (not really but probably wouldn't hurt either)
7- I gave up trying to duplicate the emissions hose diagram under the hood a long time ago (damn leaky thermal switches in the intake!) in lieu of good starting and performance (we don't have no stinkin' cold weather in Tampa, FL)
8- I prefer the feeling of accomplishment of fabricating a tach filter from $5 in Radio Shack components (and guidance from forum member) instead of paying $50 to Ecklers for a replacement 'correct' tach filter (my filter still works great but looks nothing like the OEM filter).
9- Same goes for my exhaust system... no resemblance to the original (true duals, bends in the wrong places...etc.)
10- Did I mention that 700R4, shortened drive-shaft and non-OEM available rear 3.54 Spicer gears (3.07 only avail in '80 L48)
... and my best friends are those on the forum that are more into tuning their cars for speed/power and gathering on Saturday mornings to see the fruits of their labors on the rear wheel dyno!
I am not sure about your Bubba, but we have one that works on my fathers boat at the beach, and yes his real name is Bubba, aka Bubba's Boat Repair. He's 6'2" and at least 350, his old 60's Ford truck kind leans to one side (drivers). He has must be size 15 boat shoes, and the basic crack shows in his jeans when he leans over to fix things in the boat. Gross picture I know, but he is a decent boat guy, but I'd NEVER let him touch a Vette, after looking at the Ford truck. He a real pleasant guy to be around and does a good job and is reasonable. go figure
