My '72 coupe's seat belt configuration consists of a male retractable lap belt, a fixed female receiver buckle, and a male shoulder belt that attaches to a pin receiver on the male buckle end of the lap belt. With this setup, you can use just the lap belt or the three-point harness.
Ahh, yes, I see now. I was hard to tell with the soft image. In that case, my top retainer belt has two securing points in the back of the compartment and the single attachment between the seats.
So I guess these are to secure the t-tops to the external luggage rack and not the internal rear shelf ...
The strap(s) secure the t-tops in the rear storage compartment, not the luggage rack. The external luggage racks were dealer installed in 1972 - GM never delivered a car to the dealer with one installed.
The installation for your 1972 is exactly as Gerry described; earlier cars used two seperate straps to secure the roof panels.

Rowdy Rat is correct!!! If you look closely at the picture there are two clips that connect to the rungs screwed down in the rear storage compartment. The other thing you see is a buckle for adjusting the length of the strap to tighten down the T-Tops. :D
