It sounded great but I dont think the people in trafic next to me felt the same way. I couldn't really tell a diffrence between open sidepipes and open headers.
I have driven 2 of my Vettes (68 and 69) for a total of over 20000 miles with
"Open Hooker Sidepipes". They really sound great without mufflers or baffles. However -
for long trips the open pipes are just too loud...
I am planning to travel in my 68 across the country in 2 - 3 years... Before that I will
probably add some of JCL's Spiral Turbo Baffles....
The sound with or without baffles/mufflers is dependent on the engine you have. A high compression motor will have much more bite to it that a low compression motor. The engine size and cam also makes a difference.
That said, My open side pipes sounded absolutely incredible. I would love to race them that way. For the street, there is not a snowball's chance in Hades that I could drive on the street in the presence of a cop and get away with it!
There are two bolts holding each baffle in place. If your side tubes are not stuck to the collector, it is a piece of cake to add or remove them. You could also tune the loudness of the JCL baffles to your taste quite easily. By removing the end caps on the center pipe, you make a straight through design running through the center of the baffles. I would also imagine that the length of the baffles could be cut down too, with a new mounting tab welded on what would be now the last baffle flute.
But I have to say, they work pretty darn good right out of the box! I've got more than enough volume to scare a proper respect into anyone thinking they've got a hot number!
