Where the auto shifter goes through the console plate it has a couple of pieces of plastic that slide back and forth and cover the gap. On mine they are cracked and falling out of place making it difficult to move the shifter back and forth. Can these plastic slides be replaced alone? All ive seen in the catalogs so far is an entire new console plate for $200. Also, has anyone develpoed a homegrown way of covering up the gap? Im always up for improvise. Im getting ready to rip the pieces out :smash: but the wife is always picky about interrior details.
I bought those some time ago. I believe I got them from Eckler's, but it may have been from Corvette Central (anyway, I guess any vendor has them). If I remember correctly, they are called "seals", "shifter seals", or something like that. Of course, you could easily cut your own pieces too...
Eckler's has these. Part A2168 is the lower seal and part A2169 is the upper seal. $5.50 each. Even has a picture to be certain this is what you need. Hope this helps.. :)
Pedro74 is correct, I have already replaced mine and they cheap. Corvette Central sells them for 7.50 for both parts and they are called Auto Shift Slides (Upper & Lower). You just have to pull the shift plate off the shift console and then remove the old ones and pop in the new
Thanks everyone for the response. I must have missed them when I looked in the catalog. Having the part# really makes it easier. The price seems reasonable. Im gonna get the correct parts and keep the wife happy :yesnod:
Pull the console off and take a look at what you have. You may be able to buy a piece of styrene or some kind of soft thin plastic and simply replace the broken pieces with one good one.
I got a replacement one from Zip. Was only a few bucks. The 2 sides around the handle are notched (or one side is) so when you slide it over the wider handle part you have to be careful that you don't tear it at the notch. Make sure it's warmed up before you try to install it. It is a PITA to get in and assembled. You need to remove the center console - don't forget that bolt in the back accessible from the storage cubby by feel only. ;) ~Juliet
On a 73 you don't need to remove the center console to replace this part.
Take the 4 screws off the console plate, remove the shifter ****, and the vent ***** (for non-AC car), and up she comes (you'll have some wires on the bottom of the PRN321 holder and the bottom of the cigarette lighter you'll have to remove so don't yank it up!). All this is easier in a manual car.
While your at it, you might as well replace all the bulbs, repaint, and put on a new console data place. She'll look as good as new!
Oh gee, DOH! I was reading shifter and thinking e-brake slider. Sorry. Yes, it's the center divide which needs to come off, not the rear console part. Been a long day.... ~Juliet
Thanks again people. Actually im very familiar with disassembling console and shifter related since I had previously done all that when I switched to the 200R O/D tranny. I had comnpletely removed the console and shifter assembly and converted it over for 4 gear selections. It turned out great. The kit came with a new detent and indicator which included the O/D posistion. It looks good enough so that it actually looks like it belongs there.
