Okay, I have a couple of questions that I need some help with regarding a 1970 convertible...
1) When I purchased the car and test drove it, it is was in the middle of the day. I checked the lights to make sure they popped up and worked, but I didn't thnink of checking the brights. Now here's my "stupid" question: where is the switch for the brights on a '70 (I can't locate it anywhere)?
2) There are 2 little ***** on either side of a larger **** directly under the steering wheel. What are these for?
3) I believe my timing is slightly off. Does anyone have a good link to a site or article on how to adjust your timing with a timing light?
4) I have a 4 speed (Muncie) and engaging 1st gear is sometimes difficult. How tricky is it adjusting the tranny so first gear engages a little easier?
Ok I'll give your questions a shot
1.dimmer switch: floor mounted possibly under the carpet
2. 1 is the headlight bypass, with the lights up you pull this and they stay up after car is shut off, the other is for wiper door same function as headlights
3. Setting timing: at corvettefaq.com, Lars has a tech article on doing it
4. Can't help you on the Muncie, sounds like a bad syncro ring but I didn't think 1st gear had them.
someone answered before me, I thought the dimmer was still on the floor till late 70's, my bad.

Thanks!
Does it grind going into first or is it that you have to put a lot of effort on the shifter to get it in?

Actually, the headlight dimmer switch on Corvettes and most American cars remained as a plunger button on the floorboard (near left foot and dead pedal) until the late 70's (77?).
To answer question #4: I just "rebuilt" my 4 speed. Basically, all I did was replace the brass syncro rings. All in all, it's not that bad of a job, just make sure you know someone with a press. First of all if you look on the far left end of the shaft, that small gear (speedometer gear) has to be pressed off. And if you're like me and couldn't bring yourself to just replace first and second gears syncros, then you also have to press 4th gear off to get to the final 2 syncros. With the right tools (did I mention it helps to have a press?) it's a fairly easy job. And a couple Labatt's go a long way towards making it more enjoyable. It just takes a LOT of patience to get the whole gear shaft back into the tranny case  . If you need any more specifics, I'd be glad to help....
I just bought a Eric70's 70 convetible, and ran into the same problem. Right at sunset, first day in, driving back I turn on the lights, and only brights so stuck at a gas station I fiddled with the turn signal stock, hazard button, headlight button etc. endlessly. Finally found it. It is indeed under the carpet- a little foot-button like lots of old cars.
 - the floor.. under the carpet!! :) :)
