Default Another pitman arm question

How much of the splines on the pitman arm shaft should be showing when the nut is fully torqued down?

I had an earlier post about how i, well..., and broke the cap on the steering box.

If there is a problem with the splines on either, that makes the difference between needing a new cap and needing a new box...$$$

The big washer is there to take the place of the lock washer. I've been pressing it on and off to try to clear out the splines of any distortion or debris. It measures about 1/4 of an inch of splines and about a 1/2 form pitman arm to box casting....This is with it torqued to 145 ftlbs.

so long as this kind of clearance is correct i don't see any need for a new box. Agree?

There is supposed to be a gap. Put the pitman arm the correct way, torque it and your done.

I like your advice and I choose to trust that it's correct, plus it keeps me from having to buy a new box.

If anybody thinks otherwise please let me know, but for now i need to track down one of those lash adjustment caps

funny thing is the only reason the cap broke in the first place is because i tried to tap the pitman arm on further...had I asked first, there would be no broken parts

Any idea where i can get a new cap, or what other caps would fit?

I may have a couple here. Aluminum or cast cap?

the cap that came off of it is aluminum, but so long as a cast iron one gets the job done that would work too. I believe the number on mine is 7602287
