I know that title left a hundred open doors for creative replies.........
Anyway.....I have a 454 hooked to a munice 4 sp in my 68. I just rebuilt both and now I have a vibration when pulling out in first gear. It's fine at speed, at idle, in neutral( other than the typical big block shake), but when pulling out it really shakes till it gets rolling with the clutch fully engaged. I replaced the clutch, but reused the original flywheel using new 12 point flywheel bolts. the clutch is an AC Delco stock replacement. I used the supplied alignment tool( yes a plastic one) but it seemed good and snug when I tightened it down. I would like to believe that they vibrate till they break in a bit, but I know that's just wishful thinking.
Any ideas for a simple check that doesn't involve pulling the trans would be appreciated!
Had that issue on my 79 10th Anniversary Trans Am back in high school. 400 Pontiac. Clutch linkage crapped out during a drag race and I really fried my clutch. After that it shook like crazy during take off.
Pulled the T-10 replaced the clutch and pressure plate and it was good to go.
You said you re-used the fly wheel. Did you have it resurfaced before installing it back in?
Also, you didn't mention replacing your pilot bearing.
You mentioned the clutch is an AC Delco replacement. Did it come as a kit with the alignment tool and the pressure plate?
No I didn't resurface the flywheel because it was in good condition.
The clutch I put in was the whole kit, new pilot, disc, pressure plate. I did use the supplied alignment tool.
Well I hate to be that guy, but you're most likely going to have to pull the trans to get to the bottom of this. There is an untrue surface causing the vibration. Somewhere between the flywheel and the pressure plate, something isn't true. Maybe the tip of the trans main shaft has broken off in the pilot bearing and is causing alignment issues in the trans, but that seems highly unlikely. The pressure plate could be warped even though it is brand new. It happens. Best of luck.
