Default intake manifold on 454

im putting my BB back together after a rebuild and i couldnt do it with out the info of this forum.

I have another build question after installing my heads i placed the intake manifold to test fit. Im using a elderbrock performer 2 intake and after setting it in place there seems to be 2 long holes on the heads one on each side right in the middle that the intake doesnt cover up is this normal this is the same manifold i took of the engine

Are you talking about the exhaust crossover slots? Also are you using the stock BB hood.

Does it get covered by the intake manifold gasket?

The intake sometimes sits on the heads funny when you set it down, but once it's bolted down, everything should mate up.

Also, some of the intake bolts require thread sealer (Permatex makes a good high-temp thread sealant). And, smear some RTV on the heads around the water passages. Also, it wouldn't hurt to smear some RTV on the heads just below the intake ports to further prevent oil being sucked into the combustion chamber.

Lastly, most are using a 3/8" bead of RTV in place of the end gaskets. I'm partial to Permatex Gray.

Good luck!

I think thats the exhaust cross over port that heats the manifold. I had this problem on my 67 400sb firebird. Seems the year heads I had would not fit the new elderbrock manifold in this area, everything else match up. I made and added block off plates to seal.

My problem was a head and block year mis match.....not a surprise on a 40 year old car. This 67 was BUBBA's personal test car.

I was not aware that a chevy BB could have the same problem.

Good luck

Yes, the exhaust cross-over port is kinda funky looking on the big-block heads.

It looks like a square inside a square. All you have to do is seal the inner square....which is what the intake does. The outer square and the space next to it is just casting...nothing flows inside this section...therefore, no sealing is needed.

I always just fill my intake manifolds cross over slot with plaster of paris so I dont need to worry about the heads.

Fel-Pro makes an intake gasket set that blocks the exhaust crossover. It has a square piece of tin that blocks the flow. This will prevent needless heating of the carb, intake, and intake charge (needless, unless you often drive in the great white north).

I highly recommend it.

Another reason to block the manifold exhaust crossover. Wouldn't it mess up the effects of having headers?
