I have a 68 with the original 4sp muncie. The P.O. put a hurst comp. plus shifter in it, but it has a straight stick that hits my console when going into reverse. I know it should be an off set stick, but the Hurst site doesn't really list anything for specific models and years. Does anyone know the Hurst number for this application, or better yet, have an old stick for sale? I'd rather give a forum member the money than the local speed shop that doesn't even want to talk to you if your not spending a thousand bucks.
If I remember right the comp plus works with a straight stick. How bad does it hit in rev and how much room do you have on the passenger side when in 3rd and 4th ?
I know they make a number of off sets and lengths for the comp. plus. It might come stock with a straight and thats why it's the the PO thought was correct, but it's not.
I have a ton of room from 3-4 to the passenger side ( 3"), but I can't even tighten down my console because I need that much extra room for reverse. I have seen the Hurst replacement that looks like the original stick, and it has the off set. Hurst has so many different off sets and lengths I want to be sure I get the right one.

I just installed the competion plus in my 75 a few months back, it fit perfect with-out the spacer, the consoles must be different. I am also running a muncie.
I think it has more to do with the shifter than the stick. Some shifters have an offset built in and some have no offset like the super shifter , if I remember right.
My '68 has the straight hurst comp. plus shifter, I don't recall using any spacers.
I'd be looking at adjusting the linkages and maybe the shifter stops.
Here is the transmission end of the reverse linkage, it sounds like you need to adjust it so the throw is shorter.
I'm not having a problem front to back....It's side to side that is the issue. When I engage reverse, it hits the drivers side of the console plate along the side, not the trans tunnel.
I might not have been clear on what I meant by off set either. I'm referring to offset just above the shifter bolts below the boot that moves the stick over the the right about an 1" or so. Not an angled back stick as opposed to a straight up and down stick.

Thanks for the reply DZ, your pic did help me though, reminded me I have to put the lock nuts back on my reverse rod.....Sorry for the confusion, I wasn't real clear in my original post( was late after a few malted beverages).
The stick that came with my shifter has an angle bent into it to the right. It also came with a spacer.
Rather than use the stick, I used a Mopar Pistol Grip stick with the spacer. It fit fine.
Anyone come across a solution here. I am having this same problem, not sure what Hurst shifter is in the car but I have lots of room on the passenger side and next to none on the driver's side.
I haven't bought one yet, but the hurst stick number that comes with the kit is 7991. It's bent at an angle to the right just above the mounting bolts. I heated the one I have and bent it in my press and it worked pretty well. I've been looking on e-bay, and a car shows for one because a new one is $100.00 and I'm not positive it will work. If I could find one and get the degree of angle so that I could match the bend on mine exactly to the 7991 number, then I would know for sure. I'll have to keep looking and I'll let you know what I find out.
I just installed a Hurst Comp Plus in my 71 and the stick has a definite bend to the right side and a spacer. It fit perfectly in the opening and does not hit anywhere.
My solution was to install one of the factory look alike shifter handles from Corvette Central. The only thing I don't like about it is the tilt to the right so I made a wedge to install between the shifter and the handle to compensate for the angle in the shifter handle.
It does not touch my console in any direction.
BTW, I found that if my console trim plate was not seated fully down on the console the shifter handle would hit fore and aft and to the left. That meant making sure the console itself was as low as it could be first then making sure the trim plate was as low as it would go on the mounting tabs in the corners.
I know this might sound a little "Bubba" but my hurst shifter was too tall for my liking, so I cut it down about 1 inch at the bottom. I ended up using that piece as a spacer to compensate for the offset. It works perfectly. Now it is centered and does not hit the plate anywhere.
Recently replaced a Bubba installed Hurst "Indy" shifter in a 76 with a Hurst Competition Plus unit because of problem with hitting the console in reverse. The mounting bracket moves the shifter to proper location. Although Hurst said no way to make Indy work, after having both on bench, the Competition bracket would have solved the problem. Competition Plus shifter is a much better mechanism.
Wonder if those with problem have correct brackets.
