What you should really do is call as many cam manufacturers as you have time to, and ask them. They'll ask all kinds of questions about yoru engine details, transmission, converter, axle ratio, tire size, driving habits, personal preferences for driving so be prepared. Call as many as you can and you'll notice a pattern in their recommendations. This should really zone in, and you'll learn what woudl be mild, what is aggressive, as well as other facts (great opportunity to ask questions and learn). If you have noticed as it is you are getting recommendations now from a 256 to a 274. Thats a pretty big range.

I personally ran a XE256 in a couple L48s (8.5:1 882 heads) in my vette & a camaro, with Performer intake, Holley 650, headers in one manifold in the other. It was good but on the conservative size. If I had to do that identical setup again I would have gone up a size to a XE262. I like the Comp XE series because they have aggressive profiles and a nice split in the duration which apparently helps out, especially with restrictive exhaust systems, and less-than-ideal heads. Even AFR heads, with their outstanding and disproportionately high-flowing exhaust port, allegedly function best with a split like that according to AFR techs. But like I said, do some research, talk to different companies, get recommendations from professionals. And when it comes time to change it drop me an email because I have a nice new in the box Crane timing chain with your name on it :)

Comp Cams XE262 would be good. I have the XE268 and its pushin the limit for daily driver in my opinion.

Has anyone here had a problem with valve-to-piston (L48 in my case) clearance with larger cams, like one with .520 of lift?
