Default Engine and trans pulled at once?

Hi all

I havent been on here much... weather is finally nice enough out to break some bolts.

Anyhoo

I'm to the point of deciding wheather to pull the trans and engine at one time, or just engine then use a floor jack with the trans. I'm not sure what all needs to be out of the way for the trans to get pulled... but the engine is only fly wheel bolts and grounding strap from out.

Thanks all

For what it's worth, I took mine apart at the flywheel. Came out pretty easy. I guess if you are going to work on the trany, you may want to take that out at the same time, with the engine. I just propped my trans up with a floor jack.

Thanks guys...

Started pulling stuff off the trans... prolly gonna come out with the engine, because of a stuck belhousing bolt...

Does the crossmember have to be dropped also?

Andies
I'm in greensboro, so that would be an awful long haul. But thankyou for the inspiration... your car is beutiful

You do not have to drop the cross member just unbolt the tranny mount at the tail housing. Remember once you get the engine and trans free it will try to swing forward so be prepared to stop it. Go slow tie a rag aroung the tail housing or you will have a big mess quick when the back of the tranny clears the mount.

Good luck

What are you going to use for pullin them out? I used a hoist that has a 5' boom and an engine tilter. You will need the tilter for sure and without the 5' boom you can't oull it from the front.

You didn't mention if you have a 4 speed or an auto. If it's an auto, I'd definitely do it seperately. I have mixed feelings on pulling them as one unit. I'm going to be doing this on my car next week. I did it all at once on my camaro, but that's a different car. i'm worried about bumping the radiator, and I really don't want to take that out.

The best way to keep that from happening is get a piece of 3/4 inch playwood and cut ot to the size of the radiator and then wire it in front of the radiator to keep the engine forn damaging it. That is what I did and it works great. Oh ya, remove the hood to give more clearance.

You would have to be a mechanic with hands like an eye surgeon to pull the engine without taking the radiator out. The problem is the clearance between the engine and the radiator. Even with the fan and water pump off you have a tight fit. Taking the radiator out isn't such a big deal and it allows you a LOT more room to maneuver the engine as it is coming out or going in.

I pulled mine out together by myself and it was pretty easy. It was scary having all that weight dangling over the frontend of the car though
I used a large roll aound hoist and a leveler. I removed all the accessories to decrease the size and weight of the assembly. I was able to clear the radiator pretty easily with a nice tilt on the motor. I did place several blanket/quilts on the frontend to protect the paint. I would buy a rear output shaft plug for the tranny to keep the fluid from draining out, or you could drop the pan on your auto trans first to drain it that way. I have a 4 speed so I used the plastic cap/plug. Good luck, it's not too hard to pull them :smash: :smash:
