Engine Block #

On a 79 Corvette, should the block # match the vin ? And is there a way to tell if the car was originally an automatic or a four speed ?

The last 6 digits of the VIN should be stamped along the front edge of the passenger side deck of the block, right in front of the head, along with other stampings. My '81 also has these 6 digits stamped on the tranny, I don't know about your '79. I'm sure some VIN decoder guru will step in and answer your tranny question...

Thanks L88 for the info. It appears my engine is not original. Now I really wonder if it was originally an automatic.
