OK, I'm mid way thru my project here. I'm installing a new cam, timing chain, intake, and headers on my '79 L-48 'Vette. How the engine compartment looks good, but I'd like to paint the engine before I begin the reassembly part.
As far as I can tell the correct color would be blue but is there a way to clean the oils and stuff off the engine without taking the whole engine out of the car and also spraying water all over my garage. Also would it be better to spray on or brush on the new paint. Thanks for the help again!
I used a kiddy pool to catch the runoff that I created when cleaning. The pools are probably out of season now. I put the jackstands to the rear of the wheels so I could get the pool under the car.*MAKE SURE the stands are secure under the frame before proceeding. As far as paint , it's going to be tough to spray without over spray. Clean off any overspray with laquer thinner. Tom
You may not like my reply, but a lot of guys are painting them to match there cars. Thats my vote. :)
I'd paint my car to match the engine! Love that Chevy Orange!!! :D
Anyway, I can't really help with the clean-up operation, since I did mine at a self-serve car wash. All I can say is that Simple Green works pretty well.
Now, I painted my engine on the car with spray paint (VHT). It's feasible, but you really have to be careful and mask everything. I covered the whole car, because I knew that anything left uncovered would be covered with the orange dust from hell. I used heavy-duty aluminum foil to mask all the small parts, hoses, harnesses, etc. It works great! Also used lots of plastic, masking tape, and newspapers. This is what took the most time. After that, the painting operation was (messy but) easy.
