Default 71 bb quadrajet metering area

Have a 71 with 454 and quadrajet. Motor is newly rebuilt, but I cannot get it running quite right. Decided to go through the carb. Float was way too low...I set it to .375 as recommended by Lars' paper. Book show that originally the carb had 77 jets, 49 main rods(for a metering area of .00277088) and BG secondary rods. Currently there are 78 jets, 45 main rods(area of .00318793) and DG secondary rods. Is the difference in metering area enough to be a problem? Secondary rod difference a problem? I see where edelbrock sells the 77 jets, but cannot find the 49 main or BG secondaries anywhere. Any suggestions as to where to go with all this?

What is the carb number? 7041204 or 7041205? If so, looks like someone richened it up.

Are you sure those secondaries are DG and not BG? Don't know if I've seen a DG in any documents. You can get the 49B primary rods and 77 jets from carburetion.com.

Hopefully you still have the original carb 7041204 or 7041205. If so, then the best thing to do is set it up to original specs and go from there.

Edit: First make sure your timing is set properly.

It's 7041205. Yes, marked DG on the secondary, searched and found it measures .0340M instead of the .0400 of the BG it should have. Thanks for the tip about the carb site, but it doesn't seem that the have that BG for sale.

I don't know if you can locate the exact BG secondary rods but look at part number "e1951" on this page. It's as close as I could find:

http://www.carburetion.com/rodshang.asp

There's more choices for primary rods and jets on above page. You should be able to find exactly what you need on the primary side.

Good luck!
