Default Stater Issues?

I believe I'm having starter issues....any advise would be greatly appreciated. Took my 71 out for a drive yesterday, no problems til I got back. Turned off, then attempted to restart, but would not. Lights came on, all guages working, but acted like the battery was dead. Not a battery issue. Left for one hour, came back and attempted to restart and it fired right up! Any help diagnosing?

Yes, exhaust is stock. I have only owned my vette for 2 months, so I'm unsure about the age of the starter. Do they work intermittently? I thought either they worked or didn't.

Heat soak.

Several solutions:
1) Heat shield
2) Heat wrap
3) Newer starter

I replaced my starter with a newer model from a 90's big block truck. Works great and is about half the size and weight of the old starter.

if you look under the passenger side you will see your exhast and your starter the exhast will run right next to your starter and your starter is taking alot of heat from the exhast and that could be called heat soak and that will make your starter act the way it is... so how do I know this it happened to me and I had to replace the starter and then I wrapped my exhast with header wrap next to the starter and now I don't have any trouble starting even after I go cruising for a couple hours so you can get header wrap from your local autozone or adavance auto parts store and make sure you get the steel bands to hold it on in place good luck with your project it should take a couple hours and you should be starting up and cruising again my friend

if your talking about carpet insultion no you don't want to risk it catching on fire header wrap is made of fiberglass which reduces heat
