Currently if it's hot outside (around 90 or so) and I'm sitting idle at a traffic light with the AC blowing hard my 1982 vette engine temperature will rise fairly quickly until I start moving again. My manual says the optional cooling fan will come on at 238 degrees, which their in no way my car has ever even seen that kind of temperature and I wouldn't allow it.
My question, can I replace the current temp switch in the head to allow the fan to come on at around 200 or so? Is their such a replacement switch out there? Is the stock fan worthy of such use?
My 82 only has 52,311 original miles on it, meaning the fan has probably never had to run. The car has been in my family since new, always garaged.
The aux electric fan is turned on by the temperature sensor completing the circuit to ground. Two things you can do. Buy a temperature sensor that will complete the circuit at 195 degrees (available at Summit and Jegs). You can also install a relay in your A/C circuit so you aux fan will run anytime your A/C is on.
