Knock from bad fuel pump
I have a 78 with an L82....has an annoying knock... the fuel pump is leaking a little oil.....perhaps its the rod that rides on camshaft thats causing this......??....anyone had the problem...?

i realize that oil dosnt circulate through the fuel pump........i have heard of that its the sign of pump being worn....and....if so....could the rod that fuel pump operates off be bad..causing the knock

A fuel pump can knock all by itself- in fact, on later cars with a knock sensor, the fuel pump knock can retard the timing. Pushrod can be perfectly fine, and the pump still knock.

On mine the trasmission cooler lines were contacting the oil pan. I had replaced the oil pan and afterwards it had a horrible knock. I had it in the air and was able to pull the lines away and the knock disappeared.
