Looks like the interlock linkage back to the trans. Moves the lever on the column that keeps/prevents you from removing the key.

Goes to the transmission. On a 4 speed it goes to the reverse gear lever on the transmission. Designed so you cannot take the key out of the ignition until you put the car in reverse. Once the key is out, you should not be able to take the car out of reverse. Anti theft...

I'm not familiar with configurations for automatics. Imagine it works the same, probably locks the shift in Park?

For details as to where the brackets go, check out the AIM for you car.

Does the cable move freely? They sometimes sieze up if they aren't moved for a long period of time. I had one get stuck, freed it up using 3-In-1 oil and working it back and forth.

BTW: Looks like you're missing a bracket/clip on the front end of the transmission? I recall one which holds the cable close to the transmission...

That is the lock cable- Automatics, it has to be in PARK to get the key turned to lock. Manual, in reverse.
If you remove it, you'll need to secure that lever on the column in the up position so the key will come out.

Here are a few photos I took of my 74 Vert before I removed the auto trans.

Enjoy!

I wonder if its worth the effort to reattach. It does add to the early demise of the trans shift cable.

GM using those wire wrapped cables is "kind of" a good thing. Forces you to maintain the ground cables from the starter to the frame. If you don't, good ol' electricity finds the easiest path and will weld those wire wrapped cables into one solid piece.

Normally, the bracket that holds the shift cable to the trans pan has a forward end that the interlock cable mounts to.

My car with 4-spd did not have that interlock cable - someone had already removed it. Found out when I removed the steering column. Wonder if I should look at my starter ground cable?

Very good question.
I've removed mine but what happens is that yes, you can rotate the key off in any gear.
AND if the column lever slowly drops down with time, and you get in to turn the key and are having problems.....pop the hood and reach down and pull up on the lever. Then try again.
