Default replacement block question

Are all Chevy replacement blocks CE blocks? Also would they have different casting numbers or would all blocks including a factory replacement for an early 70 be a 3970010 block?

Thanks

Does it have ANY numbers on the ledge in front of the right cylinder head? I doubt a replacement from around the time the car was made would have a different casting number. Did you find the date code? That would tell you if it were from the right time frame.

I'm not an expert on the topic of CE engines but I gather they were whole engines which were dealer installed replacements under warantee. I don't know if the ledge would be stamped at all if a bare block or maybe even a short block were bought over the counter.

In a word, no- not all replacement block were stamped with the CE designation. The casting number supplied would be the current day production casting that meets the configuration requirements of the original block. Because the 0010 blocks were in production for many years and in fact beyond the end of the 5y/50K mile warranty program that started the CE series, it's most likely that replacements for '70 Corvettes were mostly or all 0010 casting numbers.

I am asking as I saw the following on another Forum and I know where an engine like this with all the internals is for sale.

"block casting # was on the right hand rear of the block, and the # was 14016379

Welcome to the Reggie Jackson Collection Of Original GM vintage parts.

Today I am pleased to offer an original gm CE Crate Engine replacement short block .

Condition is stated as NEW and would like to tell you what I know. This engine was awarded to reggie in 1979 direct from GM as a promotional item for marketing purposes. It has been kept safe from harms way for 31 years and never opened used or installed. I removed it today to document the listing with pictures. Looking back in time, It features all the good stuff inside. Hi alloy nickle content in block during the casting process.Nickle was added for the hi performance application. It resist abrasions at operating temperatures at 220-320 degrees. Also fitted with hi performance 11.1 TRW standard size pop up pistons, Includes the hi performance pink colored rods and 1182 hi performance crankshaft. this short block is a perfect replacement for the 67-72 Corvette or Camaro ,specifically the 1970 LT1. It makes 370hp with the standard issued 202 big valve heads. The heads are not included with this factory crate engine block. Features the 4 bolt main caps and plastic crankshaft gear and the solid lifter 30 30 duntov camshaft. This design is the most powerful gm shortblock ever produced utilizing a single holley four barrel carb....rated at 370hp from Detroit. Capable of 8k rpm and reliable right out of the crate all day long."

Sounds like a lot of marketing hype for a fairly common over the counter replacement engine. Yawn.

It would NOT be correct for any C3 if judging is your goal.

I agree it sounds like marketing BS. My interest is really for the internals as I have an LT1 engine that I want to rebuild and this motor has all new internal parts and the right heads. I just don't want to throw away the block to later find out it was a real replacement. It seemed odd that this engine has the same stuff as the one in the Jackson deal, maybe someone saw it and thought they could build one as well?

I had never heard of anything but the CE replacement for a warrantee replacement. Not looking for having the car judged just looking for the right components for the fun of driving a 370hp Vette.

The engine has no historical value. If the price is right, buy it and use it as-is.

Note that the ad states that heads are NOT included.

The engine I am looking at is not the one in the ad. It is another engine with all of the same parts including heads with the proper numbers. That is what made me ask the question in the first place is that this is a second engine with the same build. I have the correct LT1 block so I just want to use the internals of this engine if they are correct.

Probably not worth this much discussion as I can just buy new parts from GM for a few more dollars.
