Sorry for the unsolicited "advice", but FWIW, if you don't care about a stock appearance but you still want/need to go with 2-1-2, you may want to check out what kind of custom job a muffler shop can do for you.
Here's some pics of my 2-1-2 system, which uses 2-1/2" dual front pipes, into a single 3" pipe, into a single 3" in, dual 2-1/2" out catalytic converter, into dual 2-1/2" rear pipes.
I like the custom Y-pipe in the front. I also like the 3" single pipe. Plus, I was able to hear the system with different mufflers on it before I finally chose a pair.
jerryp58....like your setup there. Sometime back on this thread, on a discussion of X-pipes, someone suggested putting a cat in place of the X-pipe. That way you could avoid having two cats and the X-pipe. Wonder how your setup performs in comparison to a true dual with 2 cats and an X-pipe?
I've heard or read the X-pipe / Converter argument before. I'm not sure how much I believe it and I've never seen any real numbers on it. If there's one advantage to packaged systems (like Borla), it's that they probably have a lot of Dyno testing behind them (like Flowmaster & some of the other mufflers too, I guess). I'll never know those kinds of numbers for what I chose. I think the biggest plus for the system I have is that the single pipe & cat are 3". That 3" is a lot longer than an X-pipe, but I am curious: Does anyone know the cross sectional area of a typical X-pipe (say for a 2-1/2" dual system?
I ordered a "SS Y" from Allen's Stainless Exhaust while at Carlisle. I did'nt get the more expensive one, but did get the one for $210. Came about 10 days later and it installed and fit perfectly like the factory one bolting up to the original NOS mufflers I found plus to the mint used "catalytic converter" I bought at Bloomington last year for $40!!! :yesnod:
