I am trying to use some C5 hood hinges to lift the hood up as it flips forward. I want to mount them off the front of the radiator support on either side of my intake.
I need to add a new cross piece to the underside of the hood for the hinges to bolt to. I have done some glass body repair, but nothing like this. I want to make sure it is strong enough to support the weight of the hood.
You could make a new brace out of matte and resin. You would need to lay it up on some kind of mold. Then you could bond it to the hood with bonding adhesive. You could make a mold plug out of wood or bondo, Then paint it and wax it and lay up matte and resin to make the female mold. Then remove the plug and lay up the new brace in the mold. Good Luck, Craig
I believe you can rough up the surface on the under side of the hood, use bonding adhesive on the cross brace and then simply glass over the cross piece for additional strength.
Or you can make the cross piece out of fiberglass and use bonding adhesive and glass it to the underside of the hood. Same as above.
If you opt to make a mold, use anything that works to make the mold. I prefer cardboard and a hot glue gun. Easy to measure, cut and fabricate almost any shape. Then cover the mold surface with duct tape and wax it up real good, leaving the wax in place.
You need to put a brace across the bottom of the hood, which is a surface that isn't flat at all, if I understand you correctly. If that's the case, take a marker and lay out a couple of lines as to where you want your brace to run. Then put some masking tape on the outside of the lines, and lay a heaping mound of expanding foam between the tape. Let it puff up enough that you can trim it to shape later. The tape prevents it from sticking to the hood where you will need to glass later. Come back later and take the tape off, shave the foam to the shape of the brace that you want, then you have a nice, easily shapable surface to put your mat and resin over. Just test your foam with your resin before you do this to make sure your resin doesn't eat up your foam. You should watch for clearance issues as well. There's not much room to spare under that hood.
