Cleaning interior plastic pieces???

those around the rear glass (on a 78) and the retractable
storage shade? Mine are looking pretty faded and dirty.
They also happen to be black, so it is pretty obvious.
Thanks.

I've become somewhat of a Jedi of cleaning these old parts.
1. Get yourself some Simple Green as a degreaser. Wash the part in warm water, some good dishsoap (like Dawn), and simple green. Dry with a clean cloth.
2. Eastwood sells a prodcut called "Pre" that is a silicon remover. I don't know of anything like it off the shelf. It gets rid of years of Armor All crud that ruins plastic. After the part is dry. Spray this on and wipe it off carefully. Use only the clean side of a paper towel to remove.
3. After this you will have a REALLY clean surface, but it will be somewhat faded. At this point, you have a couple of options
1. Repaint the part. A good semi-flat black paint (NOT SEMI GLOSS OR GLOSS) wil restore to the original color and wear well.
2. Get a prodcut called "Pig Spit". Motorcycle guys use it for rubber and plastic parts. This will bring back the black luster.
3. If you have to use any sort of over the counter product, get something called Formula 2001 by Turtle Wax. It's similar to Armor All but not as harsh.
Your best bet long-term is to re-paint. You can use a duster and simple light soapy water solution to keep the inside nice.
Good luck!
